POETRY TUESDAY!

NO ALIBI FOR FAILURE.

Fellow trustees,
Almost three score years ago,
Our fathers nationalized
The incorporated trustees of Nigeria,
Well conceived in liberty,
And on the principles of
Freedom, equality and justice.

We have given to ourselves
Her constitution,
Especially its chapter 4.
We have established for ourselves
Great Academia like UNILAG,
affordable, quantitative and qualitative learning.
For our rich and poor.

Alas!
No alibi will excuse us.
Framework for success abounds,
For those who will think.

We cannot continue to channel our efforts
Into corruption.
As it is trite,
That no wealth or position can long endure,
Unless built on truth and justice.

We cannot afford to be indolent,
No such thing as something for nothing.
We cannot afford to give up the struggle,
On the belief that the battle cannot be won.
We must learn from Thomas Edison,
The secret behind persistency.

It is for us rather,
To be dedicated to the labour
Of our heroes past,
Which shall never be in vain.

That our nation under God,
Shall have a new birth of freedom.
That government of the people,
By the people,
And for the people,
Shall not perish from the earth.

Inspired by "Abraham Lincoln".
